Some say rap artists are the poets of our generation.

Although Flau’jae Monae Johnson is only 14 years old, she already has the heart of a poet and the rhythm of a seasoned rapper. The Savannah, Georgia, native comes by these talents naturally; her father was Jason Johnson, a Savannah-based rap artist known to fans as Camouflage. Sadly, Flau’jae’s dad was killed before she was born, leaving her and her mother to fend for themselves in the world.

Before she launches into her original song, Flau’jae shares with the judges how important it is to honor her father with her music, while simultaneously asking difficult questions she’s not sure society is ready to hear.

“If he would’a put that gun down, then he would’a been here right now,” Flau’jae sings in the song’s refrain. Her lyrics hit on several high and low points of her life, from watching her mother struggle to keep the lights on, to her hopes of becoming an internationally known rapping poet.

At 14, Flau’jae seems wise beyond her years, which is often a by-product of having to grow up too soon in the face of unspeakable tragedy. Sharing her life experiences via song makes them a valuable resource for those who try to be empathetic and understanding of all viewpoints.

We’ll have to wait for the season premiere of “America’s Got Talent” to see how she fared with the judges, but we’re betting we’ll be seeing more of this talented young artist very soon.
