With COVID-19 leaving millions of families uncertain about going back to school, students need more support than ever.
Some children are struggling to get basic supplies, whether they’ll be learning at home or in the classroom. Not to mention, there are so many teachers who need to prepare for the year. That’s why teens Manogna Jonnalagadda and Prisha Mehta of Texas decided to spread kindness throughout the Dallas ISD community!
The two Centennial High School students came up with the idea when everyone began adapting to virtual classes at the beginning of the novel coronavirus outbreak.
They started packing bags with school supplies, books, and even basic hygiene items. Then they distributed them to elementary schools and underserved communities – forming an initiative called Project Kind Packs.
Each pack comes with a handwritten letter encouraging recipients to have hope and believe in themselves.
“With our Kind Packs, we want to spread kindness, words of encouragement, and motivation so these classrooms can fulfill their full potential this coming school year and confidently transition into a normal learning environment,” Manogna told NBC DFW.
Their goal? To hand out these special care packages to 300 students and teachers!
Each bag costs about $10 to make, so they’re asking for donations via a Facebook fundraiser. They’re hoping to raise $3,000 total, and they’ve already reached over $2,000! Once they complete their initial mission, we’re sure they’ll set their sights even higher.
What a great way for these two to help their community and make education a priority for their peers! While the upcoming school year is surrounded by uncertainty, this community can take comfort in knowing they will have what they need.
