John is a Professor of Economics at the University of West Scotland. He also serves as the Director for the Centre for African Research on Enterprise and Economic Development there and is also the Honorary Consul Ethiopia in Scotland. Yet it’s not John’s impressive professional credentials that have the internet buzzing; it’s his 40-year marriage to his wife, Justina.

Back in July, John, dressed in a traditional Scottish kilt, attended the Queen’s garden party in Edinburgh. Justina, wearing a dress made from Ghanaian Kente cloth, was his date.

The day after Christmas, though, he decided to reshare the photo as a way to celebrate their love and educate the world on the power of diversity.

After John posted the tweet, the message spread throughout the internet, gaining attention from celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Zoe Saldana. Soon, couples from all over the world started sharing their own tales of overcoming prejudice and fighting for the right to love who they love, no matter what.
