Healthcare workers battling COVID-19 are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), but nobody said it had to be boring!
Adrian Pe is a nurse in Iloilo, Philippines who recently came up with a creative way to raise his fellow healthcare workers’ spirits. In an effort to help them “live out their childhood,” he’s designed PPE that looks like Teletubbies and Power Rangers!
Due to a shortage of PPE across the world, Adrian has joined the many home sewers who are spending their down time making garments, masks, and other gear for hardworking healthcare providers on the front lines. Instead of choosing dull material, he decided early on to make his PPE something that would not only protect them from contracting the virus, but would make them smile in the process!
“I chose the Teletubbies because it gives frontliners not only the protection but the positive vibe, and Power Rangers to inspire workers to live out their childhood superheroes,” Adrian explained.
“In general, all front liners and nurses, they are risking their lives and also their families’ lives as well,” said Adrian. “I correlate it with our modern day heroes, our front liners.”
Adrian’s brightly-colored suits were an instant hit with the medical community. When word got out, more volunteers stepped up to work on the suits as well. Seamstresses and tailors from all over began using his patterns to make the suits. Hospital staff even started making the suits themselves!
Within three weeks, Adrian and his army of volunteers had distributed over 600 suits to area hospitals! He personally churns out between 6 and 8 suits each day, using custom colors upon request. “Some say they want to wear [certain colors]. It makes me happy to see them wearing these,” said Adrian.
Way to go, Adrian! These suits are bringing joy to an otherwise bleak situation. Our healthcare workers are definitely heroes at work, and now they can look like the super heroes they are!
