Many of us remember having crushes as kids, taunting each other on the playground and pretending that boys are icky and girls have cuties. But Freddie Gibson is a boy who moved past playing hard-to-get earlier than most. One day he told his parents that he had decided that his long-time friend, Dee Dee Jones is actually the girl he wants to marry.
His epiphany came while witnessing the beginning of one of his mom and dad’s dates. When he realized what was happening, everything clicked concerning his future with his ‘beautiful’ friend.
Freddie was ready to take their relationship to the next level and he asked Dee Dee to go on a date with him! Below is the full story told by their mothers:
Ms Gibson, 37, said, “Katy and I went to antenatal classes together, and the whole group stayed in touch after the kids were born. We met up as often as we could, so Freddie and Dee Dee have grown up together since birth.
We’re all close as a group, but Freddie took a shine to Dee Dee – it’s quite an easy name so it was one of the first he started saying. He always used to get excited when he saw her and would shout out her name, and it’s just grown from there. They’re at different schools and don’t get to catch up as much as they’d like – which is how the date came about.
Me and Ian were going out, and he asked what a date was – we said it’s where you take someone out that you really like and spend time with them. He had a little ponder, then said ‘well I’d like to take Dee Dee on a date’.
He decided he had to wait until she turned five, and when she did at the end of March they started planning it.
They decided to go to Pizza Express – he bought her flowers, and she had a new dress and her hair done all nicely. It was so lovely and sweet – they held hands all the way.
Ian and I sat at a different table on the other side of the restaurant with Dee Dee’s mum Katy and baby brother, while Freddie and Dee Dee sat at their own table. They were like little grown-ups – we kept a watchful eye from a distance, but they did the whole thing themselves.
Pizza Express said they were such a cute pair that they couldn’t charge them – I think Freddie was actually quite disappointed, he was so prepared and ready with his pocket money. He said he had a great time – we asked if he’d like to take her out again, and he said ‘yes, because she’s beautiful’.
If you ask Freddie who his girlfriend is, he’ll say Dee Dee – but he might also say some others at the same time! It would be so lovely if they got older and started dating for real – we’d never push them into it, but if it happens it would be wonderful.
Freddie has it all mapped out – he’s said they’ll get married and move to Birmingham, to be close to Dee Dee’s grandparents. He’s also said that she’ll do all the ironing and change the nappies, but I don’t know if Dee Dee will agree to that!”
Dee Dee’s mother Ms Jones, 35, also added, “Since they could talk, Freddie has been adamant that he and Dee Dee will grow up and get married – and she seems quite happy to go along with it!
They couldn’t be more different, but they just click. They’ve always had a special relationship – they’ve swapped Valentine’s cards since they were toddlers, and since they learnt to write they’re always swapping notes.
Dee Dee is used to getting letters from Fred but when she opened the invitation she turned around and said ‘what’s a date mummy?’ I thought it was so sweet and funny – I explained it to her and asked if she wanted to go, and she said ‘yes, I’d like that’.
I said I’d buy her a new dress, and on the morning of the date she chose a flowery headband and painted her nails.
I think the staff were a bit taken aback when they saw Dee Dee walking in hand-in-hand with Freddie, holding a bunch of flowers. Freddie was very serious about the whole thing – it was so sweet, but also quite amusing to watch everyone’s reactions to it.”
Young love is absolutely heart-warming and gives a certain type of perspective on our relationships as adults.
