Claire Mills always knew she wanted to be a mom — but not now, and certainly not while she’s still single.
The 25-year-old NICU nurse already has plenty on her plate, after all. She just bought a house in Sugarland, Texas, and has been working two jobs to pay the mortgage. Plus, she gets her “baby fix” at work. But all those reasons ceased to matter when she helped deliver this tiny newborn.
It was only her second week at Houston Methodist Hospital when she was called to help with an emergency cesarean-section back in May. Her team successfully delivered baby Jackson, who was born prematurely and weighed just 3 pounds, 10 ounces.
Claire has worked with countless babies, but something about this one felt different. She couldn’t get him out of her head. “He just felt very familiar to me,” she said. “I feel like I know him.”
Throughout the following weeks, she grew close to his mother, who had complications during the birth and was struggling. So when the mom and baby were discharged on Claire’s day off, her heart broke.
“I was so hurt I cried,” she told GMA, “but I called the social worker and asked if there was anything I could do to help support the mom.”
Word got back to Jackson’s birth mother, who, as it turned out, didn’t have the means to raise him and was planning to give him up for adoption. After a moment she said felt like “a sign from God,” she asked Claire to become Jackson’s mom, and Claire said yes. She knew it was meant to be!
Of course, things haven’t been easy since Claire took Jackson home. She never planned on being a single mother, but with her own mom’s help, things have been going well. And Jackson has already carved a permanent spot in her heart. “I can’t remember what my routine was like before him,” she said.
While Jackson’s adoption hasn’t been finalized, Claire hopes to make it official soon. In the meantime, she’s treasuring every second with her now 4-month-old son — whom she knows was meant to be hers all along.
