People with Down syndrome are beautiful in every sense of the word. Their joy and ability to love so freely are as admirable as they are sweet.
That’s what Nicole Perkins, a baby and special needs photographer from the U.K., hopes to show the world through her work. And that’s certainly what she did last year with her photo series “Down Right Beautiful.”
“The story behind my images are to celebrate and help raise awareness for Down syndrome,” Nicole told POPSUGAR. “[‘Down Right Beautiful’] featured 32 babies, children, teenagers, and young adults with Down syndrome and their stories, plus any advice their parents would give to families who have just had a diagnosis.”
Nicole had so much fun that she decided to do another series in 2019 – this time with a magical twist.

Like many others, Nicole is an avid lover of all things Disney. So, she couldn’t think of a more perfect way to celebrate children with Downs than by capturing them as some of her favorite Disney characters. She calls this project “Down with Disney.”

Throughout October, which is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, Nicole released adorable shots from each session on Facebook. She featured characters from classic Disney hits including “Cinderella”, “The Lion King”, and “Snow White” along with newer films like “Brave” and “Frozen.”

It wasn’t long before the photos went viral, touching the hearts of millions. Nicole has been amazed by the positive response – and grateful others are appreciating the beauty and magic of Downs.

“The response has been incredible, and it was so much fun creating the images. I have met some amazing families in the process, and I’m so glad to see the joy the images of their children has brought to so many people,” she said.

The photographer, who also works as a special needs educator, says she’s one of those people.

“I feel so lucky to work with teenagers and young adults who have Down Syndrome almost everyday,” she wrote.
