Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal is already well-respected for his skills as an athlete, but this past week he gained even more respect. He melted hearts with a show of compassion, right in the middle of a match.
Nadal was playing a doubles exhibition match with Spanish teammate Simon Solbas against Spaniard Carlos Moya and American John McEnroe in Manacor, Mallorca. It was his turn to serve, but– as he prepared to play– a noise in the crowd caught his attention. At first, the commotion confused both Nadal and the rest of the crowd, but everyone quickly realized that the noise came from a frantic mom who had lost her little girl in the arena, packed with over 7,000 people.
The panicked mom can be seen describing her little girl, and clearly scared. But that’s when the most amazing thing happens: the audience begins to help her look for her! Complete strangers are calling out the little girl’s name, Clara, until she’s finally found and reunited with her mom.
Both Mom and daughter are sobbing as they embrace; it was clearly a traumatic moment for them both. A massive smile explodes across Nadal’s face when he sees that the two have found each other. The match re-started, and he and Solbas went on to win.
Watch the moment below, when Nadal stops his serve to make sure this mom can be reunited with her daughter.
