Marc and Mary Taylor consider themselves lucky to have escaped the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history. But while the Camp Fire didn’t claim their lives, it took everything else from them.
The couple’s Paradise house was destroyed — and with it, precious memories. All their photos, including their nearly 20-year-old wedding album, were reduced to ashes.
Among the lost snapshots were photos of loved ones who’d since passed away, including Marc’s mother. They were absolutely devastated, but Mary still held on to a small glimmer of hope that somehow, they could get the priceless mementos back. With their anniversary coming up in August, Mary contacted their wedding photographer, Richard Briggs, for the first time in decades. There was a chance he’d still have copies of their pictures. It was a long shot, sure, but she had to try.
And incredibly, Richard remembered them! In fact, he recalled, it was one of the most memorable weddings he’d been to. “I remember him crying as she was walking down the aisle,” he said. “I thought, ‘These people are so much in love.'”
Even more amazing is the fact that he had, indeed, kept copies of their photos after all that time — which is pretty unusual for a professional photographer.
Marc and Mary couldn’t believe their luck when Richard promised to remake their album. The sweet man even delivered it personally! As the Taylors flipped through the book, memories they though they’d lost forever washed over them once again.
While Richard’s copies had been faded, his wife was able to scan, edit, and restore their color to its old glory. Richard also gave the couple all the original negatives as well.
Best of all? The album included photos of Marc’s late mother. “It gave us a piece of something back after losing everything,” Marc said. “I don’t know how to explain it. There’s no words.”
“People often ask us why we became wedding photographers. Without a doubt, this story reflects our number one reason why,” Richard wrote in a Facebook post. “It makes our hearts happy to have the opportunity to give them back a little of what they lost.”
