Pigeon That Can’t Fly Forms Cutest Friendship With Puppy That Can’t Walk.

Friendship, like love, is often blind to the things that could keep us apart.

When Sue Rogers rescued a Chihuahua named Lundy, she knew the pup would require extra care. So at just 4 weeks old, Lundy arrived at The Mia Foundation, Sue’s New York-based shelter, which specializes in caring for animals with special needs.

Lundy was born to a breeder in North Carolina, but as she began to develop, it became clear she had mobility issues. Then they discovered she probably had spinal cord damage and would never walk unassisted.

Undeterred, The Mia Foundation took her in! They’re hoping when she gets a bit bigger, she can get a special doggy wheelchair and find her forever home.

In the meantime, she’s found another source of love. As she settled into the shelter, she forged a close bond with one of their permanent residents: Herman the pigeon.

Herman came to the shelter several years ago after he was found unresponsive in a parking lot. While he’s mostly recovered from his injury, he’ll never be able to fly again, so they couldn’t release him back into the wild.

Sue wondered if he’d get along with Lundy, so she gave it a try. “I set Herman on a dog bed and started caring for Lundy, and I decided to carefully put Lundy in the same dog bed next to him,” she explained. “They started interacting immediately in a very cute way.”

For the first few days, Sue kept a close watch on the two of them, but it quickly became clear that they were going to be great friends!

In fact, Lundy and Herman love to cuddle, so Sue snapped a few pictures and posted them on the foundation’s Facebook page. The pictures went viral, and now these unlikely best buddies have the world rooting for them.

What a beautiful friendship! We do hope Lundy is able to get adopted someday soon, which might just mean Herman will become the shelter’s official welcome committee.
