There are some coincidences that feel completely heaven-sent, and this story illustrates the beautiful way that the universe sometimes seems to conspire to make things happen at just the right moment.

A 27-year-old man named Nico Bellamy decided to pop the question to his long-term girlfriend Caitie Schlisserman. Years earlier, Caitie’s father had presented Nico with her late mother’s engagement ring. He told Nico to keep it safe and to use it when he was ready to get married.

Nico put the ring into a safety deposit box, where it remained for years.

In July 2017, Nico and Caitie decided to move houses, so Nico took the ring out of the bank and put it into a plastic baggie in his backpack. He knew he’d be carrying the backpack with him during the move, so he figured he’d keep the heirloom safely on his person at all times.

Once the dust started to settle after the move, Nico noticed his backpack lying unzipped on the floor. He instantly panicked, fearing the worst. “I went to go get it and noticed my backpack had been unzipped,”he said. “When I dumped everything out and realized the ring wasn’t there, I ran to the bathroom and threw up immediately.â€

As Nico racked his brain, trying to think of how this had happened, he remembered the movers asking if they could move his backpack at one point. He realized they must have accidentally unzipped the bag, allowing the ring to fall out.

When the couple went to visit Caitie’s dad, Nico came clean about losing the ring. To his surprise and joy, her father was understanding, stating they’d find a way to “figure it out.” The two men decided to keep the issue a secret from Caitie, so as not to worry her or ruin the surprise of Nico’s proposal.

That’s when fate intervened.

While driving back to their house, Nico and Caitie decided to take a different route than usual to avoid traffic. If they hadn’t taken that back road, they never would have seen the sign pinned to a tree by the side of the road. It read, “Found Engagement Ring.”

Later that day, Nico returned to the sign and called the number listed there. He described the ring he’d lost, and was delighted when his description matched the ring that had been found! Nico had never felt such intense relief.

It turns out that some of their new neighbors had found the ring in an alley by their houses; the moving company had used that alley to park their truck on move-in day.

A few weeks later, Nico and Caitie took a trip to Paris, where Nico asked her to marry him.

She said yes!
