Meet Lilly Teach, a sweet nine-year-old with special needs from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Her aspirations include becoming a doctor, a teacher, or to work at a grocery store.
She loves going with her mom, Lisa, to her local supermarket so she can watch employees bag groceries… and thanks to her favorite cashier, one of her dreams just came true.
On Feb. 24, Giant Food Store employee Isaac Witte gave the little girl a simple yet unforgettable experience. Lisa was so touched by the gesture that she shared a video of their sweet interaction on Facebook. She also wrote an emotional post thanking Isaac for making her daughter’s day.
“My daughter, Lilly, loves to watch the ‘bagging process’ at the grocery store,” Lisa wrote. “She likes watching how everything fits into the grocery bags, kind of like the game tetris. I believe its sort of therapeutic for her in a way.” You can imagine how thrilled Lilly was, then, when Isaac asked if she’d like to help bag her mom’s purchases.
In the video, we see Isaac carefully handing each item to Lilly, who expertly places them into bags before handing them to her mom. Her happy face says all you need to know about how she’s feeling in the moment.
“I don’t know how Isaac knew how meaningful this would be to her, but somehow, he did,” Lisa added. “He took his time with her and let her bag each item. She independently bagged all our groceries and told Isaac, ‘I love you.’ She doesn’t say this to everyone, but in the moment, I believe this was her way of saying thank you for seeing me and for letting me help, I love you.”
But Lilly and her mom weren’t the only grateful ones. Isaac appreciated the experience for his own reasons. “To be honest, I also have a disability,” he later explained. “So I kind-of figured since … no one had given me that opportunity when I was younger I thought, ‘well, why not?'”
A few days later, Lisa and Lilly returned to the store to give Isaac a thank you card, where staff once again treated Lilly to an amazing day. They made her a name tag, let her scan and bag some more items, and even offered her a job when she turns 16. Talk about awesome customer service!
Everyone at the store deserves credit for going above and beyond to make a child happy — especially Isaac, who went out of his way to also make her feel seen.
