4th Time’s The Charm! Lightning Round Leads To 14-Yr-Old’s Epic Spelling Bee Victory.

According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of “winner” is “one that is successful especially through praiseworthy ability and hard work.” But in our dictionary, this word can be defined by just two: Harini Logan!

Although Harini was almost removed from the Scripps National Spelling Bee for the definition she gave for “pullulation,” judges reconsidered their decision and realized that her response was acceptable. This allowed the 14 year old from San Antonio, Texas one more shot at winning the competition, something she’s tried three times before already.

Harini’s participation video shows just how intense these contests can really be. In an interview, Harini says that a common misconception is that spellers have to memorize a bunch of words.

“I think as a speller, personally, that each and every word — you need to really understand it to be able to spell it,” she said. “… It’s often not just looking straight at the dictionary but rather at trouble spots or particular languages.”

During the spelling bee’s final round, Harini faced 12 year old Vikram Raju from Denver. The two contestants were pretty much tied which prompted the judges to go into their first-ever lightning round to determine the ultimate champion.

We can only imagine how much pressure these two were feeling, especially since this was Harini’s fourth time competing, but you’d never know it based on how quickly she was able to spell so many words. In fact, she ended up spelling 22 words correctly in just 90 seconds, earning her the win!

“This is just such a dream,” said Harini while celebrating her victory with her family on stage.

Wow, after that lightning round, we don’t think we’ll be able to view spelling bee contests the same. Congratulations, Harini!
