Whenever Lena Riley of Henderson, Nevada, hears the rumble of sanitation trucks on her street, she always rushes outside with a huge smile on her face.
Her mom Leslie said that’s because the toddler has formed an adorable friendship with the workers in their neighborhood. Not only does Lena look forward to the trash and recycling days each week, but she also insists on sharing homemade treats with her BFFs in the big blue vehicles!
“If she hears the truck outside and we don’t have something to feed them with, she’ll start to cry and say, ‘We have to feed the blue trucks!'” Leslie said. “We’ve gotten to know them very well.”
On April 17, Lena celebrated her third birthday. Because of the novel coronavirus, her family kept the celebration small. The next day, however, Lena’s friends at Republic Services surprised her with the perfect gift — and a memory that will last a lifetime!
A family friend had reached out to the company to see if Lena’s pals would honor their little fan on her special day, and they were thrilled to do just that.
When the time came, they told Leslie to wait outside with Lena, but the two of them had no idea what was coming. Next thing they knew, an entire fleet of Lena’s beloved big blue trucks appeared and rolled slowly down their street!
Each one was decorated with pink and white flowers and cheerful signs. Even better, Lena’s friends brought her a gift bag filled with coloring books, a coffee mug, and a hat so she can show off her Republic Services pride.
The 3-year-old was over the moon with joy and excitement, and no one could resist smiling with her!
Leslie said it was the best gift her daughter could have received!
“It’s good to see a community coming together during a time like this,” she added. “It was just the sweetest. Every truck that came around the corner, [I had] more tears.”
What a wonderful way to help a little girl celebrate her birthday! These essential workers really went above and beyond to give back to their community, and we’re so thankful for them.
