EMTs Make Hospice Patient’s Final Dream Come True & The Photos Are Beautiful.

All her life, Laura Mullins of Ohio loved lighthouses. She collected lighthouse figurines and adorned her walls with photos of famous lighthouses all over the world, yet she had never been able to visit one in real life.

As Laura lay dying at Kindred Hospice in Massachusetts, she told the staff that her one regret in life was not making the time to see a real lighthouse in her 55 years of life. She longed to stand beside the towering structure, smelling the salt in the air and feeling the power of the sea as it crashed around the jutting rocks of the jetty. Now, she feared her time for having such an experience had passed.

Hospice nurse Beverly Bellegarde, however, had other plans. Unwilling to let her patient pass away without fulfilling her wish, Beverly reached out to the Brewster Ambulance Service and asked for their help. Johnathon Bobbit-Miller, the company’s paramedic field training officer and public relations contact, said that the EMTs on their staff didn’t hesitate to volunteer their time and services for such a personal cause.

“These EMTs didn’t have to do this. They could have said no. They felt compelled to make this wish come true,” Johnathon stated.

The next day, EMTs Brian Costa and Era Koroveshi turned up at the hospice to transport Laura to the nearby Scituate Lighthouse in Scituate, Massachusetts. They day was gray, rainy, and exceptionally windy — yet the second they opened the ambulance doors it stopped raining as if by magic.

Brian and Era carefully rolled Laura’s stretcher down the path to the lighthouse, which has stood vigil over Scituate Harbor since 1810. Laura was so close that she was able to put her hands on the cold stone of the structure. Everyone in attendance, even strangers passing by, were moved to tears by the beautiful and peaceful scene they witnessed that day.

“She asked if she could see both the lighthouse and the harbor, she said that she could hear the waves,” Johnathon said. “Her face was glowing. She sat up and said, ‘My dream has come true.'”

As Laura sat next to the lighthouse and looked out over the endless sea, a chaplain came by and said a blessing for her. Johnathon described the feeling of contentment that passed over her face as she contemplated her final moments on this beautiful earth.

“She seemed at such peace,” he said. “She said, ‘I’m ready to go now.'”

Everyone from the hospice workers to the EMTs were just happy to be able to provide Laura with her final request. As such, the company has stated that they will not request payment for the ride. The good people of Brewster Ambulance Service clearly feel that they received all the payment they need just by helping fulfill another person’s modest last wish.
