Man Helps Uber Driver Pay For College — For The 2nd Time!

In December 2019, Latonya Young received an associate’s degree from Georgia State’s Perimeter College. She was only able to attend thanks to one of her Uber passengers, a complete stranger named Kevin Esch.

During their drive, the two of them struck up a conversation. After hearing the hardworking mom’s story, Kevin decided to go above and beyond to help Latonya out by covering the rest of her tuition!

But Latonya wasn’t finished with school yet! She wanted to earn her bachelor’s degree, and Kevin was determined not to leave Latonya, whom he now considers to be a friend and mentee, high and dry. So as a board member of The Jeannette Rankin Foundation, he helped Latonya apply for a scholarship.

The foundation provides financial support to women over 35 who are struggling to pay for school. It was Kevin’s original encounter with Latonya that sparked his interest in the organization and led him to get involved in the first place, so he was happy to return the favor!

Latonya is now one of their scholarship recipients, which has allowed her to continue pursuing her education. She is all set to graduate in the spring of 2021 with a degree in criminal justice. From there, she is debating between going to law school or attending nursing school, an idea that was inspired by the novel coronavirus pandemic.

“I’m so incredibly proud of her,” Kevin said. “The ultimate payback that I can get is watching her graduate.”

Amazingly enough, his kind heart and giving spirit didn’t stop with Latonya. He is always looking for ways to give back to people in need, whether it’s buying them a cup of coffee or covering the cost of their groceries, and he’s encouraging others to do the same.

“I challenge you to do a random act of kindness today for someone, known or unknown to you,” he wrote on Facebook. “If you need an idea where to start, check out The Jeannette Rankin Foundation and make a donation to help other women just like Latonya pursue their dream of a college education!”

It’s strange to think these two used to be complete strangers. Congratulations on your upcoming graduation, Latonya! We are rooting for you no matter what path you choose next!
