When Robert Irwin visited Jimmy on the set of “The Tonight Show,” Jimmy was thrilled to chat with the son of late Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin. However, Jimmy was clearly less than thrilled to meet the animal guests Robert brought along with him.
At just 14 years old, Robert is already following in his famous father’s footsteps with his steadfast commitment to animal conservation and education. Like his dad before him, Robert’s enthusiasm for animals of all kinds comes across as clear as day as he excitedly introduces his furry friends to the wary late-night host.
Together with his mother Terri and his sister Bindi, Robert helps run the Australia Zoo. They’re also starring in a new show on Animal Planet called “Crikey! It’s the Irwins,” so Robert joined Jimmy on set to introduce a few animal ambassadors from the Australia Zoo and give viewers a taste of what they can expect from the new show.
Jimmy is the first to admit that he’s a bit less than comfortable working with animals, particularly the kind of animals that might injure him in even the most minor way. Robert, who like his dad, has no fear of animals whatsoever, simply laughs off Jimmy’s fears and brings out the first guest.
Ping and Pong are baby otters who are just as cute as can be, yet judging by Jimmy’s terrified expression, you’d think they were man-eating creatures from the deep! These little guys are quite wriggly, prompting Robert to remind Jimmy to hold them “nice and tight” as Jimmy struggles to keep a grip on the squeaking cutie.
Jimmy is extremely relieved to hand the otters back to their handlers, and he breathes a sigh of relief for about two seconds… but then Robert introduces their next guests.
Yes, your eyes do not deceive you — that’s a porcupine! (We’re not going to lie; we’d be sketched out about holding one of these prickly fellows in our lap, too.) Jimmy seems to be holding his breath the entire time as the porcupine in his lap nibbles greedily on the chunk of sweet potato clutched in his hand.
Robert can’t stop gushing about “how cool” porcupines are, while Jimmy becomes increasingly worried about how… friendly the animal is becoming. “This feels like the most dangerous thing I’ve ever done,” he mumbles uncomfortably.
“That’s their defense mechanism,” Robert says excitedly as he points to the porcupine’s quills. “If a predator is going to get ’em, they’ll actually sink them right down into their skin.”
Not very comforting, Robert!
Poor Jimmy! At least Robert took it easy on him for the rest of the segment, presenting a very hands-off anteater and an adorable baby Zebra named, appropriately, Debra. While we understand Jimmy’s trepidation, it’s impossible not to feel excited about animals when you watch young Robert in action. He’s got the same effervescent personality as his dad, and we’re so glad to see the Irwins back on TV!
