We all know dogs as man’s best friend, but to a girl in Wyoming, one canine in particular is much more than that. She’s the child’s hero.
Meet Jessie the bloodhound, a six-year-old K9 officer from Jefferson County, Colorado. This incredibly good girl just saved the day — and a life — for search and rescue teams in Wyoming.
This month, Jessie and her handler, Deputy Kelly Fosler found themselves in Wyoming on an unrelated call when a 12-year-old girl went missing from her home on July 1. Natrona County Sheriff’s Office investigators tracked her movements via video footage, but at one point, the trail went cold. Then, the community stepped up to search as well.
“We had people that were voluntarily searching their barns and their buildings and their acreages,” Investigator Sean Ellis said. Unfortunately, they didn’t have better luck. So, the next day, they called in Fosler and Jessie to help.
Jessie was more than up for the task despite the 90-degree weather and abundance of prickly cactuses in the desert where the girl was last seen. After picking up her scent, Jessie spent two hours sniffing around, during which she had to take a break because of the heat. But, as Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office put it, “she knew exactly where she was going” and located the girl hiding next to a bush behind a nearby home.
Despite being hungry, dehydrated, and sunburnt from spending 20 hours exposed to the elements, the girl was otherwise fine. Without Jessie’s sharp nose, though, we don’t want to think about what would have happened.
“We’re thankful this young girl is going to be OK, and we’re thankful Deputy Fosler and K9 Jessie were in Wyoming and able to respond to help another agency and this family,” JCSO wrote in a Facebook post, adding “they were in the right place at the right time.”
Jessie deserves all the recognition (and treats) for finding a missing child when no one else could. Great job, Jessie! The same goes to Deputy Fosler for helping her partner during the search.
