N.C. Woman Discovers Wounded Puppy Tied To Tree In Swamp.

It took an entire crew to bring this helpless little puppy back from the brink, but the whole thing started with just one person.

Jessica Clayborn was hanging up laundry to dry at her home in Zebulon, North Carolina, when she heard a series of cries in the distance. Swampland surrounds her home, so hearing wild animal calls isn’t too unusual. But something about this sound in particular caught her attention, so she set off into the swamp to find its source.

And she found it, but just barely. Tied to a tree about 100 yards into the swamp, barely visible through a thicket of tall weeds, stood a two-month-old puppy trying to wiggle himself free from the rope. Working quickly, she used a pocketknife to cut him free, then waded back through the swamp to her home.

And this pup needed some emergency care for his numerous wounds, stat. He’d struggled and strained so hard against the rope, it had sliced through his fur and left a deep and festering neck wound. And his ears had burns on them and were crawling with maggots.

“Whenever I picked him up, he just kind of laid back in my arms because he was just so relieved that someone had found him,” she recalled.

Professionals tended to his wounds at an animal hospital affiliated with the SPCA of Wake County, Care First Animal Hospital, and thanks to a series of antibiotics, young Nash was soon on the road to recovery! And he’s thoroughly enjoying his new lease on life in a loving foster home, where two older dogs are helping to teach him the ways of the world — and that it’s not as scary a place as he might have thought.

His foster dad, Mark Aubut, says Nash was scared and nervous when he first arrived, but just 24 hours later, he was running around and playing with his two four-legged foster siblings. And best of all, Aubut adds, Nash has a voracious appetite and he’s “healing up really good. He’s doing a lot better than he was.”

The burns on his ears and tail, possibly a result of sun exposure, are healing nicely, but in all likelihood, Nash’s ear infection has left him at least temporarily deaf. So along with socialization, he’s learning to decode hand signals, such as “treat” and “bathroom.” We bet you can guess which is his favorite!

Human hands were obviously at work in putting Nash into a life-or-death predicament. But it’s important to realize that many more human hands were at work to save him and provide him with the kind of love and care all puppies need and deserve. This lucky pup already has a potential adopter lined up and will no doubt be settling in to his new home any day now.
