Former Monk Shares 3 Tips For Finding Peace In Solitude.

In 2010, Jay Shetty graduated from college. Instead of taking a corporate job, he decided to live as a monk and spend the next three years learning, traveling, and doing plenty of meditation.

Today, he’s using those experiences to help others find peace. What better time could there be for his words of wisdom than now while we’re all hunkering down to stop the spread of COVID-19?

Recently, TODAY asked the former monk to provide us with some encouragement and survival tips, and his answers are incredible!

I know a lot of people are feeling alone right now, and in our language we only have one word for being alone, and it’s called loneliness. It sounds like a weakness. It sounds like we need company to be happy. But I learned that there’s another word that describes this, and it’s called solitude. Solitude is the strength of being alone. It’s where we become our best company.

One of his suggestions is to do something every day that makes you happy. What that looks like depends entirely on you!

Go for a bike ride, do some yoga, fill an adult (or kids’ – no judgment) coloring book, binge watch all the Marvel movies in order, or read a book that’s been on your list for months. Whatever it is, make sure it brings you joy!

Next, Jay said you should channel your inner HGTV star by making your living space “inspiring and energizing.”

Basically, let your home overflow with positivity! Hang up some artwork that you love, open your drapes, play soothing music, or light candles that comfort you. Take the time to make your space a sanctuary. After all, if you’re going to be holed up for awhile, you might as well enjoy it.

Finally, Jay encouraged practicing meditation to help you relax, stay grounded, and be present in each moment. It’s especially helpful for anyone experiencing anxiety. To get started, try Jay’s simple breathing exercise (which you’ll find in his interview) or download an app.
