Helpless Dog Trapped In Minefield, But Brave Teenage Soldier Enters Danger To Free Him.

True bravery knows no bounds. At the risk of losing your own life, would you try to save a friend? Or a stranger? We’ve seen some truly incredible rescues here at InspireMore. Like the mother who shielded her son from a 30 ft fall with her own body and the German teen who fought off 3 armed attackers to save a stranger. But this story is about an Iranian soldier went beyond risking his life to save a child, friend or even a stranger – he did it to save a dog.

The brave soldier heard the distressing cries of the dog who was caught in barbed wire in the middle of a minefield near an ammunition depot. This was a situation where the Sunni soldier could have ignored the animal’s cries but his courageous instinct kicked in and he decided he needed to attempt to save the poor dog.

“I was standing at my post that day … I heard the poor dog moaning non-stop,” Mohammad Bakhtar told Al Jazeera. “I knew that it was a minefield, but I couldn’t reach the poor dog. Finally, I finally put my right foot to the other side of the barbed fence to release the dog. As soon as he ran, [the mine exploded].”

The dog was freed but Bakhtar lost his leg from the mine explosion. The courageous soldier has no regrets and said he would do the same thing again. “I love animals. I love nature,” said Bakhtar.

His story has gone viral in his country and he has been receiving the praises of the Iranian people and government. Thousands of people flooded the hospital where Bakhtar was receiving attention.

“I was in pain, but it gave me a very good feeling that thousands of people came to the hospital to visit me,” he said.

Bakhtar’s pain has also come with many blessings. He’s been personally offered a position in the Environmental Protection Organization (EPO) by Vice President Masoumeh Ebtekar. The vice president also described him as, “a source of honour and pride for every Iranian.”

This post fulfilled one of the soldier’s lifelong dreams: to work with nature.

We applaud the bravery of Bakhtar and the example he’s set to care for all creatures!
