11-year-old Nick Cummings and his mom, Deedee, love Christmas. So much, in fact, they collect Christmas books. But after years of collecting, Deedee noticed a lack of Christmas books with heroes who look like Nick, so she decided to write her own.
“In the Nick of Time” by Deedee Cummings is about a compassionate young boy named Nick Saint helping a classmate in need at Christmas. The story isn’t about race, but Deedee says it doesn’t have to be.
“It’s just about the holidays and about recognizing when you have blessings and to be grateful for them,” she says. “It’s the images that burn in children’s minds and stay with them. They don’t understand racial inequality… but they know how they feel when they see a character that looks like them save the day,” she said.
“My child has a right to feel like a hero, too.”
“I like the book because it shows the good in the world and what good people can do,” adds Nick. “It feels, I guess, different because I don’t really see a lot of books in my school with kids who look like me.”
