193 Students At LeBron James’ High School Were Surprised With Full-Ride College Scholarships.

Everyone should have the opportunity to go to college, but one major factor stands in many students’ way: tuition.

It’s a pervasive issue that LeBron James has vowed to help solve. In 2018, the NBA star opened I Promise School in Akron, Ohio, with a unique offer: Every student who graduates there will be able to attend the University of Akron — for free.

Now that IPS’ inaugural students are juniors, it’s time for them to start thinking about college. That’s why they headed to Kent State University in February. When they arrived, the university’s president, Todd Diacon, told the teens to look under their seats.

When they opened the cards they found, their jaws dropped.

Not only would all 193 of them receive a full-ride scholarship to Kent State, but they would also get free room and board for their first year!

They weren’t the only ones who were stunned by the news! Their parents were in a nearby room watching the scene unfold, and they immediately started cheering and wiping away tears of joy. Now their children can choose between Kent State and Akron without worrying about how much they cost!

The LeBron James Family Foundation shared a video of the touching announcement, and it’s quickly going viral. How could it not? These students deserve the very best!

“So many kids in my community just don’t have many options,” James said. “So for me to be able to be in a position where I can give these kids options to decide what they want to do with their future, it’s probably the best thing I’ve ever done.”

Michele Campbell, the executive director of the LeBron James Family Foundation, added, “The I PROMISE program is built on the ‘earned, not given’ philosophy. We are so excited that our students that have worked incredibly hard have earned even more life-changing opportunities to grow and excel.”

What a wonderful gift! We’re so glad these teens and their parents have one more thing to be excited about. Congratulations, class of 2021!
