Finding the right photo(s) can take your story from good to GREAT!

Let’s face it, we’re visual beings. Seeing is believing, a picture is worth a thousand words… we could go on and on with the sayings that tout the importance of images!

When it comes to telling your story, personal photos help users connect with what you’re saying. Consider these tips when choosing your images.

1. Make them emotional.

It’s easy to talk about an emotional moment in your life, but showing it can be difficult. Having a photo that you’re crafting your story around can be a huge help. For instance, the below image of two young boys folding the American flag in the rain is so powerful – far more poignant than a simple image of a flag.

This is nice, but it doesn’t strike much of an emotional chord.

A photo that compliments the story is a photo that’s worth adding.

2. Make sure you have the rights for the photos, or make sure they’re fair to use.

Did you take a photo you want to use? Perfect! Personal photos, like we mentioned above, help add an intimate element to your story. They also ensure that you don’t have to worry about getting permission to use them.

But if you want to supplement your post with photos from other sources, good places to look are social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), Creative Commons, Unsplash, and Reddit/Imgur. It’s important to never use professional photos unless you have retained permission for them. If you find the photos on a professional photographer’s social account, you can embed them like so (simply paste the photo link into the text box).
