Anyone would be lucky to have friends like Jasper Mazzocco’s.
While the 4-year-old from California hasn’t been in school for months, he’s still feeling the love from all his classmates at Redding Cooperative Preschool. After his cancer diagnosis, they came through for him in an incredible way!
Doctors found a tumor in the little boy’s brain in November, and he’s been undergoing treatment in Sacramento ever since.
To make the situation even harder, with his medical bills piling up, his family has been struggling financially.
Things haven’t been the same without him at school either.
“The kiddos… miss and talk about him every day,” said Becky Haskins, one of the moms at his preschool. “He is one of the sweetest souls that I have ever met, and his family is just the same.”
As it turns out, his community is equally as sweet! With the help of their families and some local businesses, his friends organized a fundraiser called Hot Cocoa for a Cure.
“They wanted to help Jasper in any way they could,” Becky said. “That was a day that I will never forget.”
On January 10, they came together to sell hot chocolate outside a Trader Joe’s store, promising all the proceeds to the Mazzocco family.
Dick’s Sporting Goods provided the tables and chairs, while Trader Joe’s contributed water bottles and a place for them to set up. Costco and Starbucks also chipped in, donating cookies and pastries to sell alongside the warm beverages.
The event was a huge success! Customers showed up in droves to support Jasper. Several were cancer survivors who left in tears, touched by these children’s kindness toward a friend in need.
The fundraiser lasted about six hours and ended on an amazing note: They’d raised over $10,000!
What’s more, Jasper’s mom Shelby shared an exciting update that same day!
Got to see the scans ourselves today that confirm Jasper’s tumor is shrinking. … There are no words to express our gratitude to our community who came out to support Jasper and our family. Tears of joy and inspiration are flowing. Keep all those prayers and positive vibes coming our way. We truly do feel your love.
If Jasper didn’t know his community cared about him before, he certainly does now! Support is still pouring in as his friends send him letters and hundreds of loved ones and strangers donate to his family on GoFundMe. Keep fighting, Jasper. We’re all behind you!
