The novel coronavirus pandemic has canceled countless special events, including Melanie Mulvihill and John Sizer’s wedding.
The Arizona couple was excited to tie the knot on April 18, but COVID-19 put their plans on hold. Thankfully, with a little help from a “Today” show anchor, John was able to give his bride the best surprise!
To cheer themselves up, John and Melanie hopped on a Zoom call with their loved ones… and their pastor.
Little did Melanie know, John and Kira Sullivan, her maid of honor, had arranged a virtual wedding ceremony — with special guest Hoda Kotb!
As it turns out, Kotb is an ordained minister (and a big fan of love). So when John and Kira reached out to ask if she would help make Melanie’s big day unforgettable, she was just as excited as they were.
With their closest friends and family members on-screen, John and Melanie were married! But the excitement wasn’t over. Kotb had a second surprise to reveal!
She introduced another special guest: country star Russell Dickerson! The celebrity sings “Yours,” the same song Melanie and John had picked out for their big day.
They were absolutely thrilled and got to share their first dance on camera while everyone watched.
“It ultimately comes down to love, and I’m just happy my family and friends all could be present and I got to marry the love of my life,” Melanie said. “It will be something to remember forever.”
Even better, the newlyweds were later greeted by more of their friends and relatives outside. Everyone held up congratulatory signs and cheered for the happy couple.
“They turned such a sad time into one of the best days of my life AND I get to relive it all over again on national television,” Melanie wrote on Facebook.
While the celebration was different than what they’d pictured, it couldn’t have been more perfect. After all, love always finds a way!
