It’s safe to assume that most people who are trying to celebrate a birthday while in quarantine are pretty sad that they don’t get to surround themselves with family and friends. This was especially true for Carolyn Oliver on her 74th birthday.
This is Carolyn’s first birthday since her husband of 50 years passed away. Knowing how sad her mom was, Carolyn’s daughter, Christy reached out to Jenna Bush Hager and Hoda Kotb from TODAY to help her surprise her mom – and the hosts delivered.
Since they couldn’t invite Carolyn to the studio to celebrate, Jenna and Hoda teamed up to surprise the birthday girl with a video call. The only problem with a surprise call, though, is that the person doesn’t know it’s coming and they may not answer.
Jenna and Hoda had to call twice in a row to get Carolyn to answer, but once she did and she realized what was going on, she was elated.
After the shock wore off, Carolyn thanked the hosts profusely for the call and even teared up (and so did Hoda). Jenna and Hoda asked her what she was doing for her birthday and Carolyn said, “staying inside like I have been for the last seven weeks.” Hoda then asked Carolyn to do her a favor and open her front door.
When she opened the front door, Carolyn’s grandchildren and daughter were standing there (at a safe distance, of course) with balloons and gifts as they cheered and wished her a happy birthday.
It’s hard to determine which thoughtful gesture surprised Carolyn more, but by the end of the call, she was overjoyed as Hoda and Jenna reminded her that she’s not alone.
