High School Senior Drew Over 400 Portraits, Their Identities Brought Students To Tears!

A senior project is an extensive undertaking, catered to your own special set of skills. But 18-year-old Phillip Sossou from the Boston Latin School decided to take his art-focused task and turn it into so much more.

He surprised everyone in his school by using his extensive artistic talent to draw 1 portrait of each of his fellow seniors. Using charcoal, a yearbook and hundreds of hours of drawing, this young man did not miss a single person in his grade… he drew all 411 of them.

Starting in February, the task seemed daunting; like it would be nearly impossible to complete.  But with skill and determination, the walls of his school’s hallways soon beamed with his hundreds of portraits. But it was more than just a show of talent. The other student’s in his class were thrilled with the surprise exhibit; moving from portrait to portrait until they found the ones of themselves and their friends.

Another significant part of the project went even deeper. Phillip’s aim, at a school divided by racial discrimination issues, was to bring students together. In an interview with CBS 5 AZ – KPHO, Phillip said, “I’m not sure if it brought people together, but at least for one day people can appreciate we are all from the same place.â€

This shining young man showed talent and wisdom beyond his years. By sharing something he could have otherwise kept to himself, Phillip was able to use his selfless gesture to brighten others’ day and bring perspective.
