Sometimes in life, we find ourselves in the absolute right place at the right time. Such was the case when a man named Rowan O’Neill stepped up to save the life of a toddler who had suddenly stopped breathing in the middle of a crowded supermarket.

The shocking moment was caught on CCTV cameras at a grocery store in Perth, Australia, in 2013. In the video, we see a panicked mother carrying the limp, lifeless body of her young daughter up to the cash registers.

The woman, whose name is Amy Collard, then does something unusual: She hands her child, Shaylar, to two strangers… and runs out of the store.

The shocked strangers try – and fail to revive the unconscious child, when minutes later the little girl’s father, Michael Narkle, runs in. Amy went outside to get him, but she was too upset to watch. Strangers worked to clear her girl’s airways, fearing that Shaylar had choked on something.

A store employee quickly called for emergency services, but the clock was ticking and no one knew quite what to do. At this moment, it was clear that the little girl didn’t have much time left, so Rowan, another customer, decided to take charge.

Taking the girl in his arms, he swept off the supermarket counter and placed Shaylar gently on her back. He began to perform CPR, breathing for the child for a heart-stopping 90 seconds… until a miracle occurred.

The girl opened her eyes and started breathing again on her own!

Immediately Rowan turned to Michael and embraced him in an emotional hug.

Shaylar was taken to the hospital where they determined that she had collapsed due to an extremely high fever. After a night under doctors’ care, the whole family returned home.

Later, Rowan told radio station 92.9, “I was just there. It just had to be dealt with.” We shudder to think what would have happened if Rowan had not been there that day – his quick thinking and willingness to help another is a reminder that we are all in this together!
