America first met 12-year-old Grace VanderWall this past June when she performed an original song “I Don’t Know My Name” on America’s Got Talent. The performance— which showcased her singing, songwriting, and ukulele skills– completed wowed the judges. Simon Cowell called Grace the next Taylor Swift, and Howie Mandel gave Grace his golden buzzer. When asked if she thought she could win, Grace timidly replied “I believe miracles can happen, so possibly!”
Now, that possibility seems even more likely. Grace is going viral for the second time, a little over two months later, with another original song, “Beautiful Thing,” sung live at the America’s Got Talent Quarterfinals. It seems that every time this little girl sings, America falls more and more in love!
Grace wrote the song “Beautiful Thing” about her big sister. “You’re my other half, what makes me me, what makes me smile,” she sings. “You’re a beautiful thing. We’re a beautiful thing together.” Not only does she have an exceptional voice (especially for her age!), but the lyrics are deeply touching. It’s so hard to believe that such a young girl wrote them!
When her performance ends, it sounds for a second, like Simon is going to criticize her: The notes are wrong, your voice is a little bit coraky at time,” he says. “But that is what makes you perfect.” The rest of the panel agrees. Howie alludes to Simon’s previous prediction that Grace would be the next Taylor Swift, saying “I predict you are bigger than Taylor Swift. I predict you are the biggest star to ever come out of this show!” He says to the emotional singer. “You are a superstar! You are the best thing I’ve ever seen on this show. I love you!”
