He was scooped up off the streets of Croatia last May, but judging by his appearance he’d probably spent years wandering around alone and afraid. Safe in his rescuers’ arms, he was delivered to a local woman known to take in the worst of the hard-luck cases.
Klaudija Sigurnjak named him Frodo, after the Lord of the Rings character, since his hair looked like the hobbit’s. But it wasn’t just his hair that gave him such a wretched appearance: He was also starving and covered in mange, fleas and ticks. And his eyes were so severely infected that they bulged out of his little face.

The poor pooch was understandably wary of humans, but Klaudija managed to win him over with her patience, love, and, of course, food.

Eventually, she’d gained enough headway that she was able to scoop him up off the streets and bring him in for much-needed medical care. Unfortunately, a vision specialist determined that one of his eyes was too damaged to be saved and he was forced to remove it.

With the most pressing medical issue dealt with, they next turned their attention to his other health issues. But the mange, fleas and ticked had wreaked havoc on his skin and he was starving — Klaudija and the veterinarians “were not sure whether or not he’d survive.â€
But they refused to give up hope, and little Frodo’s rallying spirit emerged to help win the fight. Thanks to the medication and round-the-clock care, his mange receded and was slowly replaced by little tufts of red fur.

“His transformation was phenomenal. We never dreamed that he would be so beautiful,”she said.
No one could have known, without Klaudija’s intervention, that such a beautiful and loving dog lay under all that inflamed skin — but just look at him now!

Frodo had a new lease on life, and all he needed now was a forever home. And he found one soon enough, after Marko Duspara and his wife Doris saw his before-and-after pictures and read his backstory.
“I actually found Frodo by accident one day when I was searching for something, and once I saw his picture sitting in the grass with his tongue out and just with one eye I knew I wanted him.”

This sweet dog was rescued from the clutches of death and now has everything in the world to smile about. Instead of hunkering down in dark alleyways and sides of roads, Frodo sleeps on his parents’ bed, gets healthy meals, treats, cuddles and high fives!
And instead of running away from humans who might do him harm, as in his previous life, he now goes on long, leisurely walks with his parents, taking in all the new sights and smells of his beautiful new world.

A big shout out goes to the whole host of people involved in this incredible transformation, including the Good Samaritans who found him, Klaudija and the vets for getting him the help he needed, and of course the Dusparas, for giving him the life he should’ve been living all along.
