James Bristle a friend were digging in a soybean field on his southern Michigan farm when they unearthed something that has the scientific community buzzing. What looked like a “bent fence post covered in mud” turned out to be part of a pelvis from an ancient woolly mammoth. “When my five-year-old grandson came over and saw the pelvis, he just stood there with his jaw wide open and stared. He was in awe,” Bristle said.
Bristle quickly notified the nearby University of Michigan who dispatched a team of paleontologists to the site. As they delved into the earth, the enormity of Bristle’s discovery became clear. Aside from the pelvis, the scientists unearthed a skull complete with two giant tusks, ribs, vertebrae and both shoulder blades.
The giant creature is believed to have met his fate thousands of years ago! “We think that humans were here and may have butchered and stashed the meat so that they could come back later for it,” Daniel Fisher, the scientist who led the dig, said Friday.
Remains of 30 other mammoths have been found in Michigan, but Bristol’s discovery is the most complete by far.
The mysteries our world continues to reveal are astounding.
