Kenyan Runner Makes History As 1st Person Ever To Complete Marathon In Under 2 Hrs.

Completing a marathon is a huge accomplishment in itself.

Running 26.2 miles in one day is tough for even the most athletic people. Reaching the finish line takes months of training, discipline, and sheer determination. And factoring in a speed goal makes it even harder. That’s why Eliud Kipchoge’s recent finish time isn’t just impressive. It’s making history.

The Kenyan long-distance runner and Olympic marathon champion is already known for his record-breaking pace. Kipchoge won the 2013 Hamburg Marathon (his first) and went on to win 12 of the 13 he’s entered so far. In September 2018, Kipchoge came in at two hours, one minute, and 39 seconds at the Berlin Marathon, breaking the marathon world record. And this year, he pulled off what no other athlete in recorded history could do.

In October, the Ineos 1:59 Challenge was held in Vienna, Austria. The event, sponsored by Ineos, was an attempt to break the two-hour mark for marathon distance. And thanks to Kipchoge, their featured runner, it was a success. The 34-year-old crossed the finish line at one hour, 59 minutes and 40 seconds.

“Today we went to the Moon and came back to earth! I am at a loss for words for all the support I have received from all over the world,” Kipchoge wrote on Twitter.

Kipchoge’s achievement won’t count as an official world record, as it didn’t meet standard competition rules. The challenge wasn’t an open event, and Kipchoge followed behind a car alongside a group of pacemakers.

But it’s still a win to Kipchoge and his supporters — especially his wife, Grace, who was right there to congratulate him at the end.

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta, tweeted, “You’ve done it, you’ve made history and made Kenya proud while at it. Your win today, will inspire tens of future generations to dream big and to aspire for greatness.”

People are capable of incredible things when they set their minds to it, and Kipchoge is “running” proof! Congratulations, Kipchoge, for achieving what previously seemed impossible. What you did was amazing!
