Shooting Victim Who Never Lost Her Smile Wins Homecoming Queen.

Deserae Turner was just 14 years old when her life changed forever.

Two “friends” from Snapchat had asked her to join them down by a creek to hang out one day. She thought nothing of it and went to met them. But these teens had sinister plans.

Unbeknownst to her, they had a gun. The boys had conspired together to “lure” her down to the canal in the first place, but one of them had a mission to end her life. Tragically, Deserae was shot in the head and the boys ran away from the scene. It was eight hours before she was discovered and quickly taken to the hospital.

But luckily, Deserae was a fighter.

Since the shooting, Deserae has undergone 10 brain surgeries, regularly attends physical therapy to retrain her body to move correctly, and experiences chronic pain every day. Her life is nothing like it should be for a high school girl.

But instead of withdrawing in sadness, Deserae has continued to be strong and hasn’t changed from the kind-hearted and loving person she has always been. Her inner light shines bright for everyone to see on a daily basis.

Her resilient spirit has inspired the classmates around her and this year she was nominated for Homecoming Queen. The nomination definitely caught her by surprise. When she heard the news her first thought was, “What will I wear?”.

But it turns out she wouldn’t have to worry about anything! People in her community came together to ensure she had the best night ever – they bought her a gorgeous silver dress, curled her hair in beautiful ringlets, and gave her a full face of makeup that highlighted her natural beauty.

As she walked onto the field, she was glowing. And then they announced she won the crown! She even got to share a dance with the homecoming king, who sweetly helped her keep her balance the whole time.

Deserae was thrilled to win the crown, not because of popularity but because she felt like she “truly [is] loved”. A feeling she believes everyone needs to know.
