When you find yourself in trouble, who do you call? If you’re in Dallas, the Mayor might be a good option.
Dallas resident Helen Mayer was enjoying her lunch at a local restaurant when suddenly she stood up, red-faced and gasping for air.
Her family assumed their grandmother was having a heart attack, but an unlikely hero realized that she was choking.
“When I turned around I started gasping for air,” she said. “I remember standing up, and that’s about all I remember.”
Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings -who was sitting with his family a few tables away- jumped up and performed the Heimlich maneuver on the grandma in distress. Helen recounts the amazing moment when she realized who had saved her.
“The next thing I knew, this gentleman had picked me up from behind and did the Heimlich maneuver,” Mayer said. “I came around, and it was the mayor of Dallas. It was like he was my hero.”
Rawlings learned the Heimlich maneuver from his time as a lifeguard and Boy Scout. It’s a good thing he was around! Talk about the right place at the right time. “He’s like my guardian angel!” Mayer said.
