Dallas Art Prodigy Creates Genius Plan To Help Homeless. It’s Unprecedented For Someone Her Age.

Gia Woodrum is anything but your average first grader. The 7-year-old prodigy is using her artistic creations to help the homeless population in Dallas, TX. Her short career as an artist is overwhelmingly eclipsed by the impact her efforts have made for the homeless community.

Gia’s heart for the homeless caught fire one winter evening after seeing a homeless man on the street wearing only a t-shirt. “We should buy him a coat,” she remarked to her Dad… but then she noticed another, and another.

Gia’s dad, Geoffrey, explained that it would be too expensive to buy all of them coats, but Gia’s solution was nothing short of genius.

She determined to use ALL of the proceeds from her artwork to support the homeless in Dallas. Her first auction raked in over $3,000 for people in need. The money has gone towards over 2,000 water bottles, 1,000 bags of snacks and 360 popsicles and ice cream sandwiches.

Now that winter is well on it’s way,  hats, coats and socks are next on the agenda.

“It’s so much more than just handing out a bottle of water,”Geoffrey says. “It means a lot more to sit there and have a conversation with someone and relate to them as a human being, to take them out of their situation for a minute. It’s really changed me more than it’s affected Gia. Kids don’t see people through filters yet. She just sees people as people, and these are people who need jackets in the cold.â€

While they’re ramping up for Gia’s second auction event, Gia’s parents helped her create a website to sell her artwork. The site has brought in over $4,000 for the homeless community of Dallas and continues to grow as people hear about this amazing little girl and her talent.
