Not everyone is lucky enough to have a Dad. Everyone may have a biological father, but if someone wants to fill the role of Daddy, they have some of the biggest shoes to fill. We have seen so many wonderful stories of men being welcomed into their non-biological daughter’s lives. Like the time this stepdaughter asked her stepdad to adopt her.

On November 15, Love What Matters shared the sweet story of Josalen and her mother’s husband, Shane. Or, as Josalen calls him, “Daddyâ€. Shane came into Karisa and Josalen’s life when Josalen was only 9-months-old, and they’ve been inseparable ever since.

Karisa told LittleThings, “We don’t use the term “step-father. He is her father. When he fell in love with me, he fell in love with my daughter…And [she] is the ultimate daddy’s girl.â€

“They are two peas in a pod,” says Karisa. This dynamic-duo has a love that runs so deep that Shane is already in the process of officially adopting his already-daughter, Josalen.

Even though Josalen is the only one in the family without his last name, it won’t be that way for much longer. “She’s even practicing her new name: ‘Josalen Smith.’ And when she says it, Shane’s eyes light up.”

Because, at the end of the day, Dads are there to protect you from harm’s way at any and all costs, regardless of genetics and biology. They say you can’t choose your family, but sometimes, some are lucky enough to have their family choose them. And while Josalen’s family isn’t growing by number, it’s going to grow by name and title.

Josalen has always been and always will be Shane’s little girl.
