Randy Silvers and Carolyn Berry live in Essex Country, Virginia, at Rock Spring Farm: an 18th-century horse farm that Randy and his wife renovated in the 90’s. They built the place up from rubble and care for the property and animals as best they can.

But things aren’t as easy as they used to be.

The couple is in their 60’s and Randy especially is having a tough time keeping up with the daily labor needed to keep a farm up and running.

Instead of putting the farm on the market, the pair has a creative solution in mind — an essay contest.

They are accepting 1000-word essays through October 17th of this year, at a nominal entry fee of $200. The couple will read through all the entries and narrow them down to 25, which will then be judged by a panel of educators horse enthusiasts and hobbyist farmers.

The winner and runner-up will be selected by November 26, 2015. Whoever wins the essay contest will inherit the 35-acre farm and must agree to not develop or sell it for at least two years.

The couple hopes to get upwards of 5000 entries, and with the money they plan to pay off their mortgage and taxes, establish a college fund for their grandkids and use the rest for their retirement.
