After Dropping Son Off At College, Mom Finds Sweet Surprises He Left & Breaks Down.

son leaves mom notes

As a parent raising children, the fact that someday they’ll grow up and leave the nest is always lurking somewhere in the back of your mind. It’s a bittersweet fact of parenthood.

When our kids are small, we pour our hearts and souls into them, hoping to turn them into the kind of people we’d want to know. We teach them good manners, respect, and empathy, never knowing if it will “stick” when they reach adulthood and strike out on their own.

Then, one day, the moment arrives and they pack up their things and move out to find their own way in the world.

Writer Cheryl Gottlieb Boxer of Rochester, New York, recently went through this parenting rite of passage, and her son managed to find a way to let her know that she had done her job well; he would never forget the impact she’d had on his life.

As Cheryl wrote on her Facebook page, she had just dropped off her son at the train station so that he could return to college after winter break. She got home and found the silence deafening – instead of hearing him playing music on his guitar, chatting with friends, and playing video games, she heard nothing at all.

When they’re babies, we’d do anything for a few hours of peace and quiet! But when we know they’re no longer living under our roof, the silence is painful.

Thankfully, Cheryl’s son anticipated that he’d be missed around the house because he left behind a series of secret notes for Mom to find after he’d gone.

Cheryl explained:

And then I started finding notes. Everywhere. He left me notes in all the places he knows I’ll find them. “Have a nice bath”on the edge of the bath tub. “You look beautiful”on the mirror of my medicine cabinet. “I love you”inside my coffee maker.

Finding these notes has made me so happy. And I keep finding more. Each note I find I’m afraid is the last, but then I find another.

When Cheryl called him and asked about the notes, he said he left them because he didn’t want his mom to forget him. “As if that’s possible,” Cheryl said dryly. She went on to say:

I assume by now he has found the note I left inside the dinner I packed for him. “Be careful and I love you.”Because I don’t want him to forget me either.

It’s always nice to see the hard work we put into our children paying off. Cheryl’s son has clearly grown up to be a sweet, thoughtful young man!
