CNN Hero Of The Year Reunites Homebound Soldiers With The Service Dogs They Left Behind

cnn hero of the year

Pen Farthing is this year’s CNN Hero of the Year and he deserves it. Pen was a former Royal Marine Sergeant, and while on duty, he befriended a dog named Nowzad that changed his life. After a long and grueling process, Farthing brought Nowzad home to England with him.

Seeing the effect that having a furry canine friend had on his morale, he thought this – using dogs to help heal after serving – could be life changing for other soldiers. So, he created Nowzad Dogs, a nonprofit which rescues stray dogs and cats in Afghanistan and reunites them with the soldiers who met while serving. 700 soldiers have been reunited with their companions overseas so far. The impact these reunions have on soldiers with hardships such as PTSD and feeling uncomfortable in everyday life has been invaluable. Farthing’s empathy and commitment to former soldiers like him is awesome.
