The 2016 presidential election was one of the most hard-fought we’ve ever seen. We were all reminded of how important the title of ‘Commander and Chief’ is to our wonderful nation. We can’t imagine the amount of pressure it must take to be the President of the United States of America. No matter what our opinion is of who’s in office, we can all find a deep respect for the position itself. It’s also encouraging to see the respect presidents give to one another, despite political differences during the peaceful transition of power.

An awesome piece of American history has surfaced, that reveals the humility behind the transitioning of power. The letter, written by former U.S. President George H.W. Bush to his successor, former U.S. President Bill Clinton was shared on Twitter by user, James Cameron.

The handing down of this letter, when a president steps down from office, is a tradition and we’re lucky to get a glance at what words were spoken.

Dear Bill,

When I walked into this office just now I felt the same sense of wonder and respect that I felt four years ago. I know you will feel that, too.

I wish you great happiness here. I never felt the loneliness some Presidents have described.

There will be very tough times, made even more difficult by criticism you may not think is fair. I’m not a very good one to give advice; but just don’t let the critics discourage you or push you off course.

You will be our President when you read this note. I wish you well. I wish your family well.

Your success now is our country’s success. I am rooting hard for you.

We admire this kind of bipartisan dignity shown by the our country’s leaders. It’s encouraging to see respect for one another despite coming from opposing parties.
