Chris Garth has gone surfing countless times with his girlfriend, Lauren Oiye. In fact, the Hawaii couple met years ago at Queen’s Beach in Waikiki, brought together by their love of riding waves.
That said, Chris was never more nervous on his board when the two entered the same waters on November 10. And it had nothing to do with surfing.
You see, Chris had a very special surprise planned for that day. As they paddled towards the waves, he held onto a small box, making sure to keep it out of Lauren’s sight. Multiple photographers including Lisa Tirimacco waited nearby, ready to capture the beautiful moment.
When they both stood up and caught a wave, Chris held the box behind his back. Then, as Lauren turned to look at him, he knelt down, holding it out and opening it. Lauren laughed it off at first — until she saw he was serious.
“I turn back to make sure he was on the wave with me and he was on one knee with a ring box and screamed out ‘Lauren, I love you! Will you marry me?!'” Lauren wrote. “At first I thought it was a joke and then realized it clearly wasn’t.”
Chris accidentally dropped the ring into the ocean right after Lauren said yes. Fortunately, he’d foreseen this happening and used a stand-in for the proposal. The actual ring was waiting safely on shore.
But if you ask Lauren, everything played out perfectly — including the mishap. She later wrote that Chris was upset after losing the stand-in, but she told him, “The ring isn’t lost to the ocean. The ring is simply our offering to the ocean for bringing us together and connecting us.”
“And of course I am beside myself that I get to spend the rest of my life with this man that I LOVE from the depths of my entire being,” she added.
Congratulations, you two! And way to go, Chris, for pulling off such a unique and meaningful proposal! We’re sure Lauren will cherish this memory forever — as we know you will, too.
Watch as Chris pops the question in the video below, and share to spread the love.
