Rapper Transforms Grammy Awards Into Worship Service, Boldly Performs “How Great Is Our God.”

Chance the Rapper– the 23-year-old rapper who refuses to sign a record deal– just made Grammy history. His last album, “Coloring Book,” was released online for streaming, so the Grammy Awards changed their eligibility rule just for him, allowing a streaming-only album to be nominated for awards for the first time ever! Not only that, Chance was awarded with the Best New Artist Grammy making him the first black hip-hop artist to win in this category since 1999.

Chance has repeatedly turned down multiple big-name labels and relies only on word of mouth and his SoundCloud account for distribution, meaning his music is totally free to stream; he doesn’t make a dime. Not only that, Chance has recorded with other artists and undiscovered musicians, going nameless on albums like “Surf,” an album recorded with a collection of Chicago-based musicians which was offered for free download on iTunes. The album is a mix of rap and jazz is overtly Christian in its message.

That’s why fans of “Surf” and other Chance songs weren’t surprised at all that the singer boldly displayed his faith at the Grammy Awards! In front of his idols, peers, and countless viewers, Chance turned the Grammy Awards into a worship service, rapping along to “How Great Is Our God.” The performance was truly breathtaking.

In the true spirit of collaboration, Chance shared the stage for his performance with Kirk Franklin, Francis and the Lights, Tamela Mann, and a chill-worthy gospel choir.

This young man came from nothing and now he is taking the Grammys– and the world– by storm. And he’s doing it by staying true to himself and his beliefs. Truly an inspiration!

Check out the incredible performance below (it may take a bit to load, but hang in there! It’s worth it!) and share!
