Employ disadvantaged women in Detroit and empower them to live an independent life.
with Rebel Nell
In 2009 the city of Detroit, Michigan, USA declared bankruptcy. Overnight, tens of thousands of people lost their jobs and livelihoods. The sudden collapse in Motor City led to an epidemic of homelessness that sent communities into a tailspin – according to Economist Charles Ballard, the unemployment rate could still be as as high as 20%.
While out walking her dog one day, Amy Peterson struck up conversation with the women, many of them single mothers, living at a homeless shelter across the street from her apartment. She learned of their struggles finding a job while homeless and decided there had to be a way to help them.
“There was a lot of abuse — whether physical, emotional or financial — I heard about. “That was my ah-ha moment: “What if I could teach them to be financially stable and prevent them from going back into the shelter?”
In answer to this dilemma, Amy co-founded a jewelry company with a mission, Rebel Nell.
Rebel Nell provides opportunity for women who are homeless or in transition by paying them a living wage for designing and producing custom jewelry. The pendants, necklaces, pins and rings are made from graffiti in the city that has fallen to the ground. Each piece is completely unique and not only speaks to the heart of the city, but to the strength of the women striving to better their situation.
