Meet “Dogtor Loki,” A Therapy Pup Delivering Care Packages To Hospital Workers.

We've seen people come through for each other in incredible ways during the novel coronavirus pandemic, and humans aren't the only ones helping out! Meet Caroline Benzel and Loki, her 2-year-old Rottweiler. Caroline is a second-year medical student at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, while Loki is a therapy dog at the teaching hospital. Together, they're working hard to brighten health care employees' days with adorable deliveries! Before COVID-19 began, Caroline and "Dogtor Loki" were visiting the hospital several days a week. There, the sweet pair brought joy to patients and nurses alike, but the pandemic put an end to their visits. "I got pulled from school and the front lines," Caroline told WJLA. The two could still connect with patients and nurses through video calls, but Caroline wanted to do more. That's when she came up with a perfect idea! "Everyone was wearing PPE 24/7 and because of that, they were getting rashes and irritation from wearing masks," she said. So why not make them more comfortable? Caroline began filling care packages with lotion, Gold Bond powder, ChapStick, chewing gum, tea, and other items she collected through an Amazon wish list. Then she and Loki delivered their first "hero healing kits" to ICU nurses. So far, they've put together over 1,400 kits — and they're not stopping anytime soon thanks to all the donations! "Needless to say, we are blown away by the kindness and generosity of people," Caroline wrote. "We will be distributing the majority of these to four different hospitals over the next week. AND THAT IS JUST THE BEGINNING." Caroline hopes her idea will catch on in other states. It already has in New Jersey and North Carolina! As for Dogtor Loki, this good girl is always happy to help! What a sweet way to give back to the heroes of the pandemic! You can help Caroline and Dogtor Loki create more kits by purchasing items on their Amazon wish list here.
