Sick Teen Uses His Gift From Make-A-Wish To Help Other Kids In Need.

Typically, when you hear a Make-A-Wish story, you hear about a child who goes to Disney World or meets a real-life superhero. It’s not often that you hear a kid use their wish to benefit others.

16-year-old Carlo Sandoval is the rare person who used his wish to do just that. The teenager asked the Make-A-Wish foundation to aid him in giving comfort to kids with Autism undergoing medical procedures.

UC Davis Health

As a child, Carlo was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy. Then, in May 2018, he was diagnosed with leukemia, which he continues to battle today. Because of all of his medical problems, Carlo has spent a lot of time in doctor’s offices and undergoing procedures, so he knows firsthand how difficult these appointments and treatments can be for those with sensory issues.

When he was given the opportunity to make a wish come true, Carlo asked the foundation to donate a VECTA calming station to the UC Davis MIND Institute. The mobile sensory-friendly machine is designed to promote coping to patients undergoing medical treatments.

The machine provides a number of ways for patients to relax including bubbles that change colors, mirrors that create interesting illusions, fiber optic tails that can be played with, an aromatherapy diffuser, a projector, and an MP3-compatible stereo.

The Make-A-Wish foundation came through and granted Carlo’s wish. The UC Davis MIND Institute was so grateful for the gift that they threw a big party for the unveiling of the new machine, which they’ve appropriately named “Carlo’s Calming Station”.

As if donating the calming station wasn’t generous enough, the other half of Carlo’s wish is to ultimately serve as a mentor to the kids who go to the MIND Institute. When asked what inspired him to use his wish for such a worthy cause, Carlo told UC Davis that it was his parents and their generosity to their local community.

One thing is clear, Carlo has no intention of letting cancer stop him from spreading goodness and joy to as many people as he possibly can.
