Teacher’s Genius Bread Trick Shows Students The Consequence Of Bad Hygiene.

Too bad this teacher wasn’t around at the time of the ancient Greeks when Thucydides first threw out the idea of germ theory.

People remained skeptical that germs could be transferred from one person to the other for centuries, and it wasn’t until Louis Pasteur started experimenting in the mid-1800s that the idea gained any legitimacy. By now, though, we all know it’s important to wash our hands, so this is just a friendly reminder, especially as flu season starts.

Courtney Lee Simpson, a Pre-K teacher, used three pieces of bread and three sandwich bags in an intentionally repulsive lesson that proves once and for all the importance of hygiene. Disgusting? Absolutely. Fascinating? Definitely.

She used the first piece of bread as a control, wearing gloves to pick it up and seal it in the baggie. With the second, she simply washed her hands and sealed it up. But with the third, she passed it around to the entire class, making sure it absorbed all those nasty little germs, before placing it in the last baggie.

The results? Well, take a look for yourself…

And this was after just a few days of germ growth!

Just reading about this experiment makes me want to disappear into a vat of hand sanitizer.

By the time her students complete the class, they’re all Certified Nursing Assistants, so “I teach them to take care of patients,” she said. “Part of their education is to teach them to wash their hands. This experiment was perfect for teaching about germs.”

So just go ahead and print out those pictures. Hang them up on the fridge and point to the moldy piece of bread the next time your kid ignores you when you tell them to wash up before supper.
