Long-distance relationships are hard, especially when you’re separated by thousands of miles and an entire continent. But for Marybel Lindsey and Oeds de Boer, love knows no distance.
The couple first met when Oeds, who lives in Friesland, Netherlands, became an exchange student at McGavock High School in Nashville, Tennessee, a few years ago. Sparks flew and it wasn’t long before the two were inseparable.
One of their first dates was going to prom together, and as such, the formal dances hold a special meaning for Marybel. That’s why this year, she was sad and pretty disappointed that Oeds couldn’t take her to her senior prom, though she still planned to go with friends.
Oeds has since gone back home, and wasn’t able to fly out to Tennessee to be Marybel’s prom date in May. Or, at least, that’s what the 20-year-old told his girlfriend.
On the big day, Marybel and her friends gathered to take photos together in public. They were in the middle of posing when one of the girls, wearing a sly smile, pointed out someone in the distance. When Marybel saw who it was, her jaw dropped.
There, standing on a bridge, was Oeds, holding a sign that read, “Sorry I was late there was traffic … prom?” He had flown 4,500 miles, all for her. She couldn’t believe it, and broke down accordingly.
But when the shock wore off, Marybel ran as fast as she could, straight in the waiting arms of her beloved boyfriend.
As it turns out, Oeds had help orchestrating this magical moment — namely from Marybel’s mom, Melissa. And going by Marybel’s reaction, they’d kept their secret well.
Not only did the surprise brighten the teen’s spirits, but it also gave her renewed hope that she and Oeds will make it in the long run.
“I hope people see this story and know that if you have something that’s worth keeping, a relationship that makes you so happy and is healthy for both of you, you have to make an effort to keep it alive,” she said, adding, “even if you live on different sides of the world.”
If any couple can make a long-distance relationship work, it’s definitely these two! A love like theirs isn’t easy to find, after all.
