100s Gather Outside Children’s Hospital Every Night To Light Up Their Christmas.

When you’re sick and stuck in a hospital bed it can feel like the world outside has forgotten you.

A community in Royal Oak, Michigan aims to remind all the pediatric patients at Beaumont Children’s Hospital that they’re not alone. In an outreach program called “Moonbeams for Sweet Dreams,” hundreds of area residents gather every night during the month of December to show their solidarity for the young patients inside the hospital.

This is the third year that Beaumont Children’s has hosted the Moonbeams program. Each night at 8 PM from December 1st through 25th, the pediatric patients inside the hospital go to their windows and shine a flashlight out into the darkened skies. In return, hundreds of people gathered below wave, cheer, and shine flashlights back at the kids.

Fire trucks and police cruisers add to the light show with their bright red and blue lights. People come from miles around to be a part of this fun and incredibly kind act of communion with children who are facing some incredibly difficult challenges.

“Many children are unable to leave their rooms and can feel isolated in the hospital as the rest of the world continues without them,” stated Beaumont Children’s Child Life Supervisor Kathleen Grobbel. “With the help of the community, we can make sure they go to bed with smiles on their faces.”

The children inside the hospital are not the only ones who benefit from this event. People gathered outside also feel the comfort of knowing that they are a part of something much larger than themselves — a community of kind citizens that will support and care for them if they ever need comfort too.

What a beautiful tradition! It’s hard enough being ill and in the hospital, particularly around the holidays, without adding in loneliness and isolation. This is a lovely way of letting those kids know how much they’re loved and needed in their community!
