Nothing can match the moment that a dream comes true.

Steve Winfree is a young man, but already a kidney disease has tried to steal his life. Steve was diagnosed with the disease 14 years ago and has been fighting ever since. During one of his lengthy hospital stays, Steve and his wife, Heather, found comfort in the ‘low-key’ fun their shared baseball card passion provided… so Heather decided to use their hobby as a means to break the best news possible.

Heather watched on as Steve opened the new Topps collectors pack, oohing and aawing over each and every player. Steve began to realize something was up when Heather started filming and pointing out the ‘special insert’ hiding way in the back of the deck.

Finally, Steve looked at the final card to see his very own face staring back at him. The back of the card read:

“Steve has had a lot on his plate. With his health issues he has been striking out a lot. He was not sure how he was going to end up. His wife Heather thinks he’s a great catch, so she’s decided to go to bat for him. Heather will be pitching a new kidney to him. They are sure to hit it out of the ballpark together!â€

Before Steve could finish reading the heartfelt, baseball pun filled, card, he broke down in tears.

“I saw it coming,” he said. “But I lost it and I asked her, ‘You want to save my life?'”

Due to the nature of dialysis and kidney failure, Steve has not been able to work full time in over a year. The costs of post transplant medicine, driving 3 hours multiple times a week and not being able to work at all during recovery led them to start a GoFundMe to help cover the cost of living. Donate if you feel led!
